Jamaican Savoy is an undergraduate student at the B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration. We interviewed him to find out more about his experience and how an internship has benefitted his professional development.

Why did you choose to attend UL Lafayette?
I chose to attend UL Lafayette for multiple reasons. One big reason was because it felt like home being close to my home. I see UL Lafayette as a great school all-around for me.
Why did you choose to major in Management? Why did you choose your concentration?
I enjoy all aspects of business, and management is something that has always been natural for me. My goal is to one day start my own company with the skills I learned through the UL Lafayette management program. I chose the human resource management concentration because I enjoy working with people and learning from people to grow with them. Everyone is unique and brings something special into the mix.
Why did you decide to participate in the internship program?
I have always been interested in doing an internship since I started college. Participating in the internship program is allowing me to get firsthand experience in the field I’m looking forward to working in when I graduate from UL Lafayette.
How did you first hear about your internship?
I heard about this internship from my organization, UL Society for Human Resource Management. ULSHRM is connected to the local organization Acadiana SHRM, which offers internships each semester to students at UL Lafayette.
What is your favorite thing about your internship?
My favorite thing so far about my internship is working alongside the employees of the company. I have met some great people while gaining experience as an HR Intern.
What are your responsibilities at your internship?
I typed a proposal for the orientation/onboarding for the new hires. After discussing it with the director, I created a PowerPoint presentation that would be attractive to the new hires. It would make the delivery of the information easier for both the company and new employees. Right now, I am working with the director to extract data to move it to the company’s new HR system.
What is the most valuable thing you have learned during your internship?
The most valuable thing I’ve learned is the importance of time and how to make the best of the time I have. Planning ahead and having a plan B for emergencies could help save a lot of time.
How do you think participating in the Moody Business Internship Program has benefitted your professional development?
Participating in the internship program has benefited my professional development and education by giving me firsthand experience of the things I learned in my business classes! The experience is preparing me for my future professional career.
What advice would you give to someone considering participating in the Moody Business Internship Program in the future?
Participating in the internship program is beneficial. It is a way to get great experience and to learn more in the field a student may be studying.
