Course - Specific Student Perceptions

Students taking Cajun Connection (UNIV 100) in Fall 2010 typically reported a positive and helpful experience. UNIV 100 was fully implemented in the Moody College of Business Administration in Fall 2010 after a year of piloting. Of the 350 students enrolled at the beginning of the semester, 156 (45%) completed the end-of-semester survey. Given the normal attrition rate across the first semester, I can be confident that over half of the students completing the course are represented in this sample. The survey uses a 5-point scale and for the purposes of this report, the response categories representing 4 or 5 were collapsed into an “above average” category. The criterion for excellence in achieving an SLO was set at 50% or more of the respondents endorsing an item in the above average category.

Concerning the overall value of the course, 60% believed the course contributed significantly to their ability to succeed in college, while 67% rated the effectiveness of the course as good or great. A surprising 50% reported that UNIV 100 was very helpful to their success in other courses being taken that same semester, pointing to the immediate transfer of skills and knowledge. Turning to the achievement of student learning outcomes, I am delighted to report that each of the six learning outcomes met the excellence criterion in one or more areas used to measure each.  Please see Table 1.

University-wide Satisfaction Indicators

MCOBA first-year students clearly expressed their satisfaction with several aspects of their overall experience at UL Lafayette. An impressive 85% of the students rated the faculty as good or great, while 70% gave the same high rankings to university staff.  As for their perception of how much they learned in their first semester, 70% ranked their experience as a 4 or 5 on the 5–point scale.  Of particular note is that 86% were quite pleased with UL Lafayette overall.
